Spray Tan Aftercare: Everything You Need to Know

The first 24 hours after your spray tan are the most critical. Follow these aftercare tips to lock in your color and keep your glow looking fresh for days.

The first 24 hours after your spray tan are the most important. What you do — and don't do — in this window determines how your tan develops and how long it lasts.

Avoid water entirely for the first 8–12 hours. That means no showering, sweating, swimming, or even getting caught in the rain. The solution needs time to fully develop on your skin before any moisture touches it.

When you do shower for the first time, use lukewarm water and a gentle, sulfate-free body wash. Avoid loofahs, scrubs, or anything abrasive. Your first shower will rinse off the cosmetic bronzer — don't panic, your actual tan is still developing underneath.

Wear loose, dark clothing for the first 8 hours. Tight waistbands, bra straps, and socks can all leave marks on a fresh tan. Dark colors prevent any bronzer transfer from staining your clothes.

Start moisturizing from day two onward. Use a tan-extending lotion or any oil-free moisturizer daily. Hydrated skin holds color longer and fades more evenly.

Avoid exfoliating, waxing, or any treatments that remove skin cells until your tan has fully faded. These will strip your color unevenly and leave patchy results.
